Elounda is a holiday resort on the east coast of Crete, 6 miles north of Aghios Nikolaos. Elounda is set on a bay facing the Sinalonga Peninsula, which is connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway. The small island of Spinalonga sits in the entrance of the bay and has a Venetian fortress.

Elounda is really a combination of several villages which have effectively merged.The whole area is a particularly scenic setting for an Elounda holiday and although this former fishing village has grown to become an established favourite Crete holiday destination, it still possesses a certain relaxed charm and an attractive mix of facilities, old and modern areas, and a vibrant square and busy appealing harbour.

Currency

Currency can be changed at banks and money exchangers. All major credit cards are widely  accepted as well as  travellers cheques are accepted in all major currencies, and can be easily changed at banks. Additionally you will find ATMs at various places through the island .

 30 + 210 is the code for Athens and 2810 is the code you should use when calling Heraklion city .The outgoing Code is 00

Visa and passport

Passports are required to be valid for at least 6 months required by all except: EU Nationals with a valid ID card who have sufficient funds for the length of their stay. Requirements may be subject to change at short notice. Contact the relevant authority before travelling. Visas Required by all except: Nationals of Great Britain, Australia, Canada, USA, EU, Japan for a period of 3 months.

Nationals of Andorra, Argentina, Chile, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Ecuador, Hong Kong, Hungary, Iceland, Israel, Liechtenstein, Malta, Mexico, Monaco, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Norway, Poland, San Marino, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, South Korea, Switzerland, St Christophe, Taiwan (China) for a period up to 3 months.

Nationals  of Brazil, El Salvador, and Uruguay for a period of up to 2 months. Nationals  of Peru for a period up to 1 month. Nationals of  Singapore for a period of up to  2 weeks. NOTE: Visitors using chartered tickets, leaving Greece on an overnight trip to another country, may risk having their return ticket invalidated by the authorities.

Language

 Greek is the area’s language , however the majority of the locals and especially those connected to tourism will speak English, German, Italian or  French.

Weather

 The island has warm Mediterranean climate.From November to March you will find that it is the  most rainy  period. Winters are mild in the South but much cooler in the North but the best time to visit the island is with no doubt the summer months.

Transport

 The transport system of the area is very organised and it has  as well  undoubtedly good road network , and as a result driving won’t be a problem. When it comes to choosing a taxi for your transfers you must know that  rates are reasonable and based on a Km basis.

Therefore  there is an extra charge on journeys from   and  to airports, ports, stations. If you decide to hire a car you must be aware that a  national driving licence is acceptable for EU nationals.
